Synopsis Go It Alone

Cristina is getting ready to leave for Boston for the Harper Avery Foundation awards. Hunt wants to go with her, but she insists it's a quick round trip.

Callie and Arizona are going out for a date night, and Alex promises he'll keep things under control.

Jackson checks with a deaf girl named Jill who's been bit by a dog. Her mother, Nicole, is also deaf. The parents argue about getting rid of the dog. Jackson asks if they've considered getting a cochlear implant for Jill, but the father, Kyle, says they don't want one. Jackson says Jill is the perfect candidate. Nicole signs something somewhat aggressively and Kyle tries to calm her down. He suggests that Jackson offended Nicole.

Meredith and Webber treat a man who'd had gastric bypass surgery that essentially didn't work. Outside the room, Webber tells Meredith that the patient is at high risk for post-op problems. One of them is going to have to stay overnight with him. Webber slips out, leaving the job to Meredith.

Hunt comes to Derek and tells him he's ignoring too many of his hospital duties because of the White House project. Shepherd assures him he'll handle it. A nurse comes and tells Derek that Meredith asked him to pick up the kids.

Bailey reports to Braden's parents that she's going to manipulate the genetic makeup of an HIV virus in order to deliver a gene-replicating enzyme. They don't really get it, but say they trust her.

Meredith breaks the news to Cristina that she can't go out drinking with her because she has to babysit her patient. Cristina can't find someone to go drink with her. Alex says he's busy and she stops herself from asking April. Cristina goes to check on her family of patients and finds that the parents are fighting, and she tells the father, John, that he has to leave.

The residents are planning their night out when Derek comes in and tells them he's going to teach them a rare procedure, which he'd previously canceled but says that was doing them a disservice.

Bailey is cooking up the virus she's going to inject into Braden.

Cristina, who is practicing her speech using her family of heart patients as her audience, pages Hunt so he can listen to it. He leaves.

Derek brings the residents to his patient's room and he apologizes for having changed the schedule so often. He's going to do it at 1:30 a.m. Ben is getting sleepy and Jo gives him a hard time about, calling him "Gramps."

Meredith's patient has a gastrointestinal bleed. She asks a nurse to get a resident, and she's surprised to hear that they're all with Derek, who she didn't even think was in the hospital. She now wants to know where her kids are.

Jackson and April discuss how they would handle the situation if their child was deaf. Jackson would want to get the cochlear implant, but April says she wouldn't -- she'd want to immerse the child in the deaf community.

Cristina's patient, Ivy, appears to be rejecting her heart. Cristina suggests to Ivy's mother that she call John.

Meredith is in surgery, but leaves Derek a voicemail asking where their kids are. Derek, meanwhile, is showing the residents how he's going to approach the procedure he's showing them. A nurse comes to Derek and tells him Meredith wants to speak with him right away. Derek looks around for his phone. Ben tries to get 30 seconds worth of sleep.

Callie and Arizona are watching Derek and Meredith's kids, with Callie saying that Derek owes them big time for having them cancel their dinner reservations. Callie makes a quip about how she's going to have their next baby and Arizona takes some issue with it, saying she didn't think they'd decided that.

Derek and the resident look at another patient who has a pair of scissors jammed into his skull. The man is conscious and asks Derek how he's going to get them out. Derek says, "It will be a very simple, very precise yank." Jo quickly raises her hand to do it.

Cristina and Hunt talk more about her speech and he offers to go with her to the awards. She says she wants to go alone.

Jo gets impatient with Leah, who is pulling on the scissors but not getting anywhere. She steps in and yanks them out. Derek tells the residents to get something to eat and he'll meet them in the O.R. in eight minutes. Meredith steps into the O.R. and asks where their kids are.

Back at their apartment, Jackson and April are in the midst of an argument about the parents of the deaf girl. She thinks he's judging them and thinking they're stupid. She's afraid he's judging her, too.

Ivy's mother is trying and failing to reach John, telling him about Ivy's heart rejection and letting him know that she also can't find their other daughter, Frankie. Braden, meanwhile, is operating a remote-control car that has a camera attached to it. Alex goes to him to try to find Frankie that way, because they've been playing a version of hide-and-seek with the remote-controlled car and camera (because Braden isn't allowed to leave his bubble). Braden finds Frankie unconscious and Alex sets out to find her for real.

Alex and Hunt track Frankie down. Hunt goes to Cristina and tells her about Frankie.

Meredith is upset with Derek got not telling him where he sent the kids. He has to go into surgery. We next see Arizona telling Meredith that the kids are fine. Callie and Arizona go back to their discussion about which of them will have their next child.

Derek starts walking the residents through the procedure he's going to show them, but Ben isn't there. He's fallen asleep in another room.

April and Jackson continue arguing about her beliefs and her faith. She says he's not accepting who she is, but just tolerates it. He finally shouts that he thinks her beliefs are ridiculous, adding that her God "is like our hypothetical deaf child, it's not real!" She starts to cry and says she feels sorry for Jackson because he can't believe in something he can't see or touch. She tells him she pities him.

Cristina is operating on one of her patients and Meredith and Alex are surprised she's still there instead of on her way to Boston for the Harper Avery award. Alex tells them that he's considering going into private practice.

Callie and Arizona have decided on flipping a coin to determine which of them will carry their next child. Callie flips and Arizona blurts out that she wants Callie to go ahead and do it.

Cristina and Hunt tell the mother of the three children that all three of them are back on the heart transplant list. She's still unable to find her husband John, and she wonders if he's gone for good.

Derek quizzes Jo on some aspects of the procedure and she gets the answer right. He asks her to step back, joking that "nobody likes a know-it-all." Leah steps up next and, while Derek asks for help with a bleeder and she tries to help but does something to make the situation worse, possibly dire. He shouts at her to step back.

Meredith and Hunt wait with Cristina for her cab, which is late. Hunt gets nervous and says he wants to see her off. She insists that he go, which he does, and her cab arrives.

The next morning, Webber finds Ben sleeping in a room and Ben runs when he realizes he missed the overnight surgery.

Derek, meanwhile, is trying to get his patient, Nova, to wake up. There's a tense moment when she doesn't respond, and Leah gets emotional. Derek tells her doctors don't cry in hallways, "we have stairwells for that." She says she's relieved. He tells her to remember the "what if" feeling rather than the relief. That will keep her from making that kind of mistake again.

John shows up and apologizes to his wife for not responding. He says he fell asleep and was right outside. He says he should've been there with her, rather than letting her be alone. They hug. Hunt watches all this.

Jo is helping Alex with his tie, telling him how much she admires his ability to be a "double agent," a reference to his moonlighting with the private practice. But Alex has nodded off.

Meredith finds Derek and he apologizes for having dropped the ball and not called her. They agree something has to change, but that it isn't clear what. She asks him to get the kids that day and he agrees.

April knocks on Callie and Arizona's door and asks if she can stay there for a while.

Bailey gets to the hospital in the morning feeling refreshed, telling Ben he was right about sending her home to get some sleep. She urges him to go get some sleep. He says he squeezed in a power nap and is going to scrub in with Callie on a surgery. She calls him Superman.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Cristina is standing alone for a moment until some doctors come up and start chatting her up about her work. The crowd starts to move in to the awards ceremony, but Cristina calls Meredith and tells her she doesn't actually want to be there alone. She insists that she's fine and heads into the ceremony. She looks around for her assigned table and Meredith and Hunt both stand up and wave her over. She's very happy to see them.

Catherine Avery opens the awards ceremony and goes on to announce the winner: Dr. Ronald Meyers of Johns Hopkins. Cristina applauds graciously.
