Summary Transplant Wasteland

The transition to new management has the doctors at each others throats. Matters become worse when Owen quits, leaving the OR board in complete disarray.

Synopsis Transplant Wasteland

Arizona and the others are upset that Jackson has a bigger say than they do in hospital matters. Jackson has the deciding vote and can also veto those of the rest of the new owners. Cristina thinks this is ridiculous. Derek thinks Jackson will "follow our lead." Callie says she's "not going to let some plastics fellow" tell her how to run her service. Webber argues with Catherine about the fast one she pulled to make Jackson, essentially, his boss. She says she's made a good decision, and tells Webber "there's only one room in which I take orders from my boyfriend  and this is not it."

Jackson shows up late to their meeting  with donuts, which no one takes  and says the foundation doesn't think bringing back the ER is a foregone conclusion. Cristina suggests waiting for Hunt to join the conversation and Jackson says the foundation thinks new leadership would help morale. The other doctors revolt. Cristina tells Jackson that firing Hunt is not happening. Jackson takes the position that they should be grateful the foundation saved the hospital.

"No one expected them to come in and start dictating policy," Meredith tells him.

"Yeah, well, no one expected you to sue the hospital into bankruptcy, either," Jackson retorts.

"For the plane crash that killed Lexie?" Meredith responds.

Jackson is speechless as Meredith and Cristina walk out.

Hunt assigning nurses, many of which haven't agreed to come back. Alex wants to get a 16-year-old girl into surgery and Hunt says they'll figure it out. Cristina comes to him and tells him "they're talking about replacing you." Heather comes to Cristina and tells her UNOS is on the line with a heart and lungs for one of her patients. Hunt goes to figure out what's happening.

Stephanie reports to April about a new patient, Brad, who is 31 and has ALS and was an internal medicine resident where she went to school. There's a party going on in his room and April has to break it up. Brad says he's donating his organs, but Stephanie tells him he's nowhere close to brain dead. His mother tells them he wants to donate after his heart stops. He says he's being kept alive by a machine, which he wants to shut off.

Hunt confronts Jackson about the suggestion that they're looking for new leadership. Hunt is upset  and shouting  about how they're all discussing such things behind his back. Derek tells Jackson to leave. Derek then tells Hunt there are politics at play, but Hunt says he's tired of being lied to. Their exchange turns heated quickly as Hunt says he's been trying to clean up the mess that Derek and the others made and Derek fires back, "You don't want to get into who's responsible for this! You don't!" Hunt takes a breath and nods. He turns to Jackson and says he's quitting.

Cristina chases Hunt down. He tells her he's "done" and "should've been done a long time ago." He says Derek is right and it's all his own fault. Cristina tells him no one is blaming him, but Hunt insists some do and he can't be effective.

Jo and her OB boyfriend are debating who is the real doctor. She wins when she points out that he wears pink scrubs. Alex shows up in the elevator and asks about their patient.

Jackson finds Catherine in a meeting and tells her he doesn't understand the documents he's been asked to read. She says no one does, but he has to "listen to the suits." He also asks her not to call him "sweetheart" when they're in meetings.

The parents of Alex's patient, Jalen  the 16-year-old girl who's getting a kidney today  catch her kissing a teenage boy who's also getting dialysis. They don't like it, but overlook it as Alex shares the news that she's getting a kidney. Jalen tells the boy, who doesn't seem happy.

The doctors join up for an emergency meeting after Hunt's departure. Cristina admits she told Hunt and they ask her to keep their discussions private. They also realize there are three transplants happening in one day. This basically isn't possible, but Hunt was responsible for it all.

Bailey is getting on Jackson about the Pegasus protocols for surgeries that are still in place. She wants him to change them because he's "the bossman." April comes looking for Hunt because he signed a "death warrant" on her patient  Brad had told her Hunt signed off on his decision to pull the plug  and Bailey tells her Hunt quit. Bailey then tells April to "ask the bossman," referring to Jackson, who is overwhelmed.

Cristina tells her patient about the donor heart and lung that are coming. The man, Mr. Schultz, has a rival patient who has also been waiting for a heart. He wants to talk to a supervisor. Cristina has to explain to Heather that the men were neighbors and the other guy's wife left him for Schultz.

Alex asks Meredith for a kidney procurement. He needs a surgeon to do it, then gets frustrated, calling Meredith "upper management" and saying she's too busy to get a kid a kidney. The kidney is in Missoula. Meredith tells Jo to book a plane to Missoula. They'll go together.

April tries to talk Brad out of his decision. He says this is why he didn't tell her. He didn't want to have to spend "valuable minutes" of his life convincing her. She sits down and tells him he's depressed. He says he isn't, and notes that ALS is 100 percent fatal. If he donates his organs, his death can mean something. He holds her hand and tells her she's fired.

Alex gives Jalen her medicine instructions. She reluctantly agrees to do whatever he says. He tells her about the side effects and she looks troubled.

April asks Cristina in the break room about whether she'd donate her organs if she was dying. Cristina says she thinks what Brad is doing "is awesome." She's suddenly struck with an idea.

Meredith is on a plane, talking to Derek on a phone. She tells Derek that Alex "is being a giant baby" about the transplant. Jo defends Alex, saying he's just feeling abandoned by the other doctors. Jo then turns that on her own relationship with Alex, who she says is acting like he hates her. She realizes that Alex just feels abandoned by her, too, because of her new boyfriend.

Jalen has locked herself in the bathroom in her hospital room. There's no response. Her parents say she's giving them the silent treatment, but Alex hears Jalen's phone beep. He goes to the dialysis room and takes the boy's phone.

Cristina and Heather explain to Schultz and his nemesis, Mr. Crimp, that they're going to do a domino transplant. Crimp is going to get Schultz's heart, but Crimp refuses. He gets up to leave.

Cristina calls Meredith to update her on the transplant situation, and they go on to talk about how everyone's at each other's throats. Meredith hangs up and tells Jo to stop listening to her conversations. Meredith and Jo walk into the O.R. in Missoula and the surgeons are wrapping up, not responding when Meredith asks where the kidney is.

Jo is demanding a kidney from another surgeon, but Meredith says the right kidney hopped a flight to Seattle.

Jalen agrees to let Alex into the bathroom to talk about what's next. She says she's "not ready for this," after hearing the side effects. Alex suddenly brings his feelings about Jo into the conversation  saying she should take the good thing that's happening now so that it doesn't go away. It works.

Meredith calls Alex and tells him the kidney is already on its way. He's confused and tells her to "just deal with it."

Jackson is still overwhelmed and Bailey tells her she did her surgery her own way. Cristina brings him an authorization for her domino transplant, telling him he has to sign such things after anointing himself king. Callie notices and tells Jackson to "make sure you sign your own name, not your mom's." Alex comes over and asks Jackson who sent his kidney flying coach to Seattle. Jackson doesn't know what Alex is talking about and Bailey says "he's talking about the protocol." She points out  in huge binders  that Pegasus' policy states donated kidneys from outside a certain radius will be flown unaccompanied.

Webber tells Catherine that Jackson "is drowning" and is taking the hospital with him. Catherine tells Webber to calm down and that Jackson "will get there." Webber tells her that if Jackson fails at it this it will follow him his whole career, "and he didn't even choose it  his mother chose it for him." She walks away. As Webber leaves to chase her, we see that Jackson heard all this.

Cristina comes to Crimp and urges him to get over his issues with Schultz. She tells him he can "beat" Schultz by taking his perfectly good heart and outliving him. He gives in.

Brad is telling his friends and family what's going to happen when his heart stops, and that the surgeons will have five minutes to open him up to save his organs. His mother starts to cry and ask for more time, making sure Brad is certain about his decision. April interrupts, standing in the doorway, and says, "Your son is still a doctor."

She goes on to say that he wants to "save a 17-year-old girl in Idaho who's going to get one of his kidneys. The other one is going to a 44-year-old councilman in Nevada. His kidney could be president one day."

Brad smiles and says, "You get it now." April says she does. His mother asks her to keep going, and April tells them that half of Brad's liver is going to a 50-year-old artist right there at the hospital, and a 10-year-old in Oregon will get to play on his Little League team because of the other half.

Derek and Cristina get into it about who's to blame, and she doesn't think it's about Hunt. She leaves.

Brad is wheeled to the O.R. His family and friends are at his side and he prepares to breathe his last breath. His breathing tube is removed and he starts to convulse.

Meanwhile, Jalen's kidney is delivered to the hospital by a courier. Alex and Cristina battle over their transplants and who gets the O.R., which is the only one that is staffed. April comes out and tells them to shut up because her patent is dying in the O.R. next door and he'd like to do it in peace. Jackson sees all this and suddenly takes a stand. He tells April to go back to her patient, who can take as long as he needs. Jackson tells Cristina to use O.R. 2 and tells Alex that his patient can wait because heart and lungs trump kidneys. Alex is upset, but Jackson says, "That is it."

Alex doesn't budge, but Bailey says, "Well, you heard the man, now move!"

Alex begrudgingly takes Jalen back to her room.

Meredith shows up later with the kidney and Alex says, "It's about time." Jo leaves and Meredith takes the moment to tell Alex she's sorry for everything, but they bought the hospital for him and everyone else, including Jo, "who, by the way, fought so hard for you today I thought she might cut someone to get you that kidney." She tells him to "drop the attitude before nobody wants to work with you anymore."

Derek drives to Hunt's trailer to talk. Hunt tells him to move on. Derek finally tells Hunt that nobody blames him for hiring that plane. He signs he obviously wouldn't have signed the paper if he'd known that was going to happen. Hunt reminds Derek that he blamed him for it that morning and Derek admits he "was pissed, but not at you." Derek says he's been pissed at "the world." He's "pissed at Mark" and Hunt tells him he has to let that go.

Brad is almost gone and April tells him family to pay their respects so they can prepare to operate. He struggles for his last breath and flatlines. April calls the time of death and starts the clock for harvesting his organs. His mother cries and hugs him. April reminds her they only have five minutes "or this will all have been for nothing." April ends up having to pull Brad's sobbing mother away from him. She takes a deep breath and calls in the surgeons who will harvest the organs.

That night at the bar, Alex finds Jo and her boyfriend at a booth. He tells her he was "kind of a douche face" and apologizes, thanking her for working hard for the kidney. He offers to buy her a beer and she says she's all set. Her boyfriend adds, "Yeah, we both are. We're all set."

Alex leaves and Jo's boyfriend notes the bizarre distraction. Jo apologizes and laughs it off.

Back at the hospital, Catherine notes to Webber that Jackson "stepped up." He says it was one day, but it's ultimately not fair to Jackson. She warns that he's overstepped his bounds by "wandering into parenting advice." She suddenly regrets what she's said and tells Webber that for years she's been looking for a man who'd care about Jackson as much as a dad would, "and the moment I find him, I bite his head off." He holds her hand and tells her she'll always know what's best for Jackson.

The doctors and Jackson sign the paperwork to formally become the new board. Before they get up to leave, Jackson says he'd like to discuss some things he thinks are "top priorities." Callie says, "You mean what the foundation thinks." He says no. It's not about the foundation, his mom or Pegasus' protocols. The doctors agree to listen.

Jackson moves that they reinstate Hunt, who has agreed  Derek says there are some conditions. Jackson says those "conditions" bring him to his second point: "We are reopening the ER." He says "that will be top priority" once Hunt is there to share his input. He also says that from now on the foundation will follow their lead, and the surgeons all say that sounds good.

Jackson says he's got one more thing, and Meredith tells him he shouldn't push it. He stands up and says, "We are building a new hospital, and that was your vision, not mine." He says his priority is to make sure their vision comes true. He says they're now officially a hospital run by doctors and "that should mean something."

He proposes, with all this in mind, renaming the hospital. Callie sarcastically says, "Let me guess, The Harper Avery Hospital?"

Jackson says no, and proposes a name "that can honor the very reason we've been able to come together and do this  a name that exemplifies the spirit of this hospital, but also the depth of our dedication."

He then holds up a note pad, where he's written, "Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital."

"All in favor?" he asks.

They all agree and smile.
