Callie and Derek collaborate on a brain mapping project.

Synopsis Map of You

Derek demonstrates a brain programming feature that is allowing a quadriplegic to make hand movements on a simulated hand on a monitor by thinking about them. Mickey, the quadriplegic helping with the demo, is excited by the development but wonders where Callie is, as she's been part of the project. Derek sees some lack of brain activity on Mickey's monitor that concerns him.

The interns are now second-year's and Shane is shaken when he sees a new, second-year coat with Heather's name on it.

Jo is wondering why Alex seems to be avoiding her. Leah is still trying to make a connection with Arizona, saying she wants to "take it further" with her. Stephanie is called over by April to help with a man named Ben who has an ankle fracture. He fell off a moving sidewalk at the airport on the way to Alaska.

Hunt brings Emma to work to observe a surgery. Cristina thinks it's "sweet" that Emma is at the hospital. Meredith is short with Cristina.

Meredith is trying to decide on a research project for a grant. Webber tells her that her mother, Ellis, was working on something that wasn't finished.

Stephanie panics when she sees a scan from Ben and drops a red coffee mug that Derek had accidentally brought in from home (and had asked Shane to put away, but Shane left it in the locker room when he saw Heather's lab coat, and Jo picked the mug up and used it). She found on the scan that he has a tumor near his heart.

Callie tells Derek she's not moving forward with their brain project. Derek is disappointed and says that Mickey isn't going to be happy. Stephanie shows Cristina the scan and Cristina confirms that without treatment, Ben will be dead in a month.

Jo brings Meredith her mother's journal. Callie encourages her to finish Ellis' portal vein research, saying she should invest in her "brand."

Shane asks Derek if he can switch off neuro, but Derek doesn't pay much attention. He's focused on a tumor on Mickey's brain. Derek says there's a possibility of using super glue to stop blood flow to the tumor and possibly shrink its size.

Cristina talks to Ben about the heart situation, and he says he's had the inoperable AVM for nearly two years. Cristina asks about a couple of types of treatment, but Ben and his wife ask her to "let it go."

Derek breaks the news of the tumor to Mickey, who wants to leap doing the testing of the brain sensors. Derek says it's too dangerous to take out the tumor, but Mickey refuses to grant Derek access to the sensors without trying to take out the tumor.

Arizona asks Alex for advice on how to handle a one-night stand that was mostly just making out, and Alex says Leah was like that. Arizona doesn't give anything away.

Shane, trying to glue the coffee mug back together, sees Ben's heart scan and runs to Cristina to suggest the glue trick Derek was talking about on the brain tumor. Cristina doesn't think it's a terrible idea, but says she'd been a "crap load" of glue.

Derek confronts Callie about why she's bailing on the project, saying she's letting her personal problems impact her career decisions. She asks him to bear with her while she tries to figure things out for herself.

Jo asks Webber a series of questions to try to determine why his elbow is hurting. He tells her to look deeper.

Bailey sees that Meredith has moved on from the portal vein research, but Meredith says she can't figure out how to take her mother's research further. Trying to work her way through a printer jam, Meredith stops and wonders if anyone has tried to 3-D print a portal vein.

Cristina tells Ben and his wife about the glue idea. He says the idea that she could save Ben's life is "awful," because they tapped all their money by living it up since his diagnosis.

Cristina tells Emma about the glue idea she's going to try. Emma knows it's never been done in a heart and admires Cristina's "balls." Cristina then fully introduces herself as Hunt's ex-wife. Emma hastily exits.

Alex runs off for the night and tells Jo it's none of her business where he's going each night.

Callie tries to talk to Mickey about the dangers of the tumor operation he wants Derek to do. He reveals to her that he's a quadriplegic because he caused a car accident while drunk and killed two girls. He says he deserves to have died in the car, but when Callie asked him to be part of this project that could affect others in a good way, he thought he was worth having around. He asks her to give his brain to science if he dies so that he can help someone.

We next see Alex at a bar where his dad is playing guitar.

Callie convinces Derek to go ahead and try Mickey's surgery.

In surgery, Cristina is impressed with Shane's instincts with the glue idea.

Shane finds Derek and tells him he doesn't want to work with him and Derek tells him to go.

Cristina tells Ben that they did no damage to his heart and the AVM might not continue to grow. This makes him nervous because of how little money they have. They're not just bankrupt, they're criminals.

Leah tells Stephanie and Shane that she's "in love" with Arizona, but Arizona calls her over and tells her to adjust her expectations because it was "one night." Leah says she can get carried away when she opens up a little bit, and admired Arizona and misunderstood. She promises it won't happen again and leaves, crying.

At the bar, Alex's dad sits down next t him and Alex offers to pay for his drink. Jimmy recognizes Alex and identifies him as one of the doctors from the hospital. Jimmy tells Alex that he once met a pediatric surgeon who saved his 2-year-old son's life. Alex asks Jimmy where his family is now and Jimmy says it's a "complicated answer." Jimmy offers Alex a chance to play guitar with him -- at least one of the songs his daddy taught him.

"I might know one of those," Jimmy says.

Derek runs into trouble in Mickey's surgery and there is ultimately no brain activity.

Jo is excited when she realizes Webber has a pancreatic pseudo-cyst. She says, "Bam!" He warns her to be a little more subdued when she tells her patients what is actually bad news, but then he laughs and tells her she's done a good job.

Meredith tells Callie she's doing her mother's research.

Meanwhile, Alex is playing guitar with his dad, but Jimmy doesn't know Alex is his son. He abruptly stops playing and explains to Alex that he wishes he'd stuck with teaching his kid. Jimmy asks Alex if he can show him a picture of his boy. Jimmy hands him a picture of Nicky, his half-Japanese son who lives in South Florida. Jimmy says he hasn't been back there in years. Alex tells Jimmy to leave his son alone and not let him get to know him any more than he already has. Jimmy doesn't understand why Alex has suddenly turned on him, but Alex punches him in the face. Before leaving, Alex stands over Jimmy for a moment and it just might have been long enough for it to register in Jimmy's mind.

Callie tells Derek she's not going to drop the project because she wants to stick with it for a million people she'll never meet. She tells Derek she needs his help.

Cristina tells Meredith she made history and saved a man from death and ruined his life. She also says Hunt seems very happy with Emma. Meredith is barely listening while Cristina says she doesn't feel like she exists anymore. Meredith confronts Cristina about having cast her aside last week because she had a baby. Meredith tells Cristina that she doesn't have time for anyone who doesn't want the same things she does.

Alex and Jo are yelling at each other because she thinks he's cheating on her but he tells her she should be happy because he went to talk to his dad at her insistence and it turned out he feels as bad as he has in 18 years.

Arizona, meanwhile, is restless and alone in bed when she texts Leah, "What are you up to?"

At home, Derek tells Meredith he wants to step back from surgeries and focus on his research, but make enough time for her to have a great year of work.
